In 2010 New Zealand produced around 70% of its energy from renewable resources. The main source is hydro-power. It is a target to produce 90% of electricity from renewable sources by 2025 with wind power making up the rest of this percentage. At the moment wind power powers around 160,000 homes and makes up around 13% of the electricity. Other sources include biofuel, ocean power, solar and geothermal which is a small but significant part of our resources. Renewable resources are definatley preferable over exploiting New Zealand for resources that are not sustainable.
I found this article on Stuff which is about the Green Party finding documents about the potential search for non-renewable resources.
We also source from overseas mainly with imported oil most of which is used for the powering of transport. Efforts are being made to increase the numbers of wind and geothermal plants to harness more of our natural energy.
